THE STORY BEHIND THE BOOK
From the Heart of Childhood grew from decades of real moments — in classrooms, living rooms, and quiet conversations — where Julie witnessed how presence changes everything.
What began as an inquiry into how children flourish became a lifelong practice of how we, too, can return to our own wholeness.
For more than four decades, Julie Lam has devoted her life to creating sanctuaries of connection—places where children and adults alike can feel safe enough to unfold.
As founder of Highgate House School in Hong Kong and Knapton Montessori in UK, her vision of “a warm and gentle welcome” transformed how thousands of families experienced early childhood education.
A mother of four and grandmother of two, Julie has been a voice for children, a mentor to teachers and parents, and the creator of conscious teaching and parenting methods that honour the whole human being.
Through years of walking alongside families—and through her own relationships and friendships—she discovered the quiet power of deep listening and heartfelt speaking. These became the practices at the heart of her work today.
Through The Connected Presence Practice, Julie helps others reconnect to their own inner knowing.
Her writing reveals how the three phases of childhood mirror our inner development as adults—each holding the potential to heal our deepest wounds and awaken our greatest gifts.
Living between Eastern and Western worlds, Julie has learned to bridge differences with grace, finding the common threads of humanity that inspire “From the Heart of Childhood: Reclaiming Presence for Connection”.
“Julie’s words slowed my heartbeat and reminded me of what truly matters.”
“This book met me where I was — overwhelmed — and led me back to calm.”
